What a 130°F Attic Does to Tampa Ductwork

How hot it gets
The Florida Solar Energy Center measured attic temperatures in a set of side-by-side test homes and found the peak summer attic temperature in a standard dark-shingle home ran about 40 degrees above the outdoor air. On a 90-degree Tampa afternoon, that is an attic around 130 degrees. Reflective and tile roofs ran much cooler in the same study. Most Tampa ducts live in that space.
What the heat does over time
To flex duct
The outer plastic jacket goes brittle and splits, the insulation slumps, and the inner liner can tear where it is bent. Runs sag between straps, and a sagging run collects dust at its low point. None of this is visible from the house.
To duct board
Foil facings delaminate and tape lets go, especially the cloth duct tape that should never have been used. Seams open, and the plenum starts pulling attic air into the return.
To the connections
The weak point is where ducts meet boots, plenums and the air handler. Heat cycles loosen them, and a disconnected run simply blows cold air into the attic.
Why leaks matter more than dirt
A leaking supply duct dumps conditioned air into the attic. A leaking return pulls 130-degree, humid attic air, with insulation fibers and dust, into the system. That second one is how ducts get dirty fast in Tampa, and how houses get humid and musty. Cleaning a leaky return removes the dirt it has already pulled in, and it starts again the next day.
The Tampa Electric duct repair program
Tampa Electric runs a duct repair program for existing residential customers. It starts with a pre-approval inspection by a Tampa Electric energy analyst, who provides contact details for an approved contractor to seal the leaks. Its program standards limit it to homes that received a certificate of occupancy before March 15, 2012, and its published customer cost has been $125 for a standard repair. Terms change, so call Tampa Electric before planning around it. If the ducts are also dirty, have them cleaned first, then sealed.
Call for a free quote. If you know the ducts are leaky as well as dirty, say so, and ask the company whether it seals as well as cleans.
Where to go next
Common questions
How long does flex duct last in a Florida attic?
There is no fixed lifespan, but many Tampa homes see brittle jackets and failed connections after 15 to 25 years. A look in the attic tells you more than the age.
Should I go into my attic in summer?
Early morning, briefly, with water, and only on the framing. Afternoon attic heat is dangerous.
